New and Promoted Scottish Referees
Four Scottish taekwondo officials attended the recent Class 2 (Centre Referee) course in Manchester, on 14th and 15th January, and all passed with flying colours: Craig McIntyre, Robyn Lewsley, Jim Lewsley (all from Chung Yong Taekwondo) and Angie Bailey (Central Taekwondo).
Craig, who hopes to sit 3rd Dan later this year, was a referee many years ago but stopped when he had to give up training some years ago. Now he is back in training and decided to renew his refereeing qualification. He is a welcome addition to our growing squad of well-trained and properly taught referees.
Robyn Lewsley only became a 1st Dan and a Class 3 Judge last year but is making her mark on the competition circuit. She has already been a judge at many competition but shows promise as a referee. During the referee course, the tutors were impressed by her excellent questions and she got one of the highest ever first-time scores in the written exam.
Jim Lewsley (4th Dan) got one of the highest scores on the written exam. He is keen to progress and the BTCB’s senior referees frequently comment on his skills and competence. His attention to detail, scrupulous honesty and diligence shine through in his performance as a referee. He already has his sights firmly set on becoming an IR and we fully expect him to make it.
Angie Bailey(4th Dan) only became a centre referee in 2009. Normally, new referees have to ‘pay their dues’, getting experience at various small events. But the BTCB’s referee training officers noticed something on her first referee course and, almost right away, invited to referee at the British Nationals. She rapidly got experience at many high level competitions and proved to be an excellent competent referee. Her skills have now been rewarded: at the course, she was promoted to Class 1 Referee, one of only six in the UK and the first in Scotland.
We at taekwondoscotland appreciate the hours of study and hard work that all judges and referees put into their training and are glad to see these four so enthusiastic about this often thankless job.
Their efforts will help make sure that understaffed competitions are a thing of the past.
